Humility is a virtue that can be difficult to describe because of its paradoxical nature: claiming authority about humility and claiming that one is humble both suggest a lack of humility. In Humility, Everett L.Worthington Jr. seeks a way around this paradox by looking to people who are considered by others to be humble. He suggests people as examples: Jesus, Siddhartha, Gandhi, Mother Teresa, and Martin Luther King Jr. He looks, too, at people whom he admires. He examines the characteristics of humility they share, and, in doing so, formulates a working understanding of humility.Science has
"As we shall see, research on narcissism, Machiavellianism, and psychopathy (i.e., the dark triad) and fragile self-esteem suggest that a me-first life orientation does not spread content widely throughout one's social network. Perhaps it is time to look to some new direction. That might be recapturing the classic virtue of humility and then practicing it with heroism even to self-sacrifice. But humility is not easy to develop or practice in an individualistic culture. It requires courage and moments of extraordinary heroism superimposed over a life of heroic self-sacrifice for the good of others. To help others, leadership is necessary. We thus combine humility, heroism, and leadership in this book. We hope you will be enriched, enlightened, and encouraged in your study of humility as you read these pages."--Preface. The purpose of this qualitative review is to stimulate empirical research on forgiveness within South Africa (and other portions of Africa). The article explores a Western understanding of the psychology of forgiveness, including its definition as distinct from reconciliation, its sequelae, and its predictors. Findings are examined with particular emphasis on differences between research in more Westernised societies (i.e., United States and Western Europe), where most of the forgiveness research has historically occurred, and research in South Africa. A culturally sensitive approach to the study of forgiveness and reconciliation in South Africa was utilised, and the extant research on forgiveness in South Africa was briefly reviewed. The article informs emergent forgiveness researchers about ways to effectively launch Africa-centric studies and outlines future directions in the field to researchers who are already involved in conducting forgiveness research. Thus, a research agenda is suggested for making an impact on the field of forgiveness, on forgiveness in Africa, (particularly) on forgiveness research in South Africa, and on reconciliation and the furthering of peace
